The McGraw Hill Wonders Language Arts program that we will be using in our kindergarten class revolves around an “Essential Question” topic each week. These topics often focus on social studies or science and encourage great cross-curricular connections. I have found that a fun way to introduce the Essential Question each week is through Star of the Week.
Star of the Week has two components:
When it is your child’s turn to be Star of the Week, it is an opportunity for you to visit our class and help us get to know your student better through the spotlight portion. Typically, students and parents create a spotlight poster together that we can display in the classroom for the week that includes pictures, favorite things, talents, etc.
Your student will also have the opportunity to teach his or her classmates a little bit about the topic we will be studying (with help from you.) Feel free to be creative and have fun with this. We’ve had families read us books, do science experiments, show slideshows, teach us to play games, bring in pets, etc. Keep in mind that your presentation will be for the whole class and does not need to be lengthy. Your kindergartener should help to plan and execute the presentation.
Sign-ups for the first half of the year will be available at kindergarten testing. If you're not ready to commit to a specific time yet, I will also post a sign-up genius once everyone has had a chance to sign up that will show the spot that are still available.
I typically like to do Star of the Week on Mondays, however, we can be flexible if needed. I will contact you before your week to schedule an exact time.
